Brunello di Montalcino Conti Costanti 2007

Fattoria Costanti is an amazingly beautiful winery in the vicinity of the center of Montalcino. Their total land covers 25 hectares and is divided into 12 hectares of vineyards, 4 hectares of olive groves and the rest is woodlands. Costanti’s vineyards are at an altitde of 310-400 meters above sea level. The vines are a clone of Sangiovese known locally as Brunello and range from 6 to 25 years old. Three hectares have recently been planted with Merlot and Cabernet. Harvesting at Costanti usually takes place at the beginning of October.

Today, I will give you the breakdown of their Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2007 (a great vintage in Tuscany) which I found to be a very well balanced wine.

At first appearance this wine has no sediment and therefore is a clear wine. The intensity is a medium high with a beautiful garnet color and ruby rim. The legs are a medium plus showing signs of a good quality wine…

On the nose there were no signs of corkage or off aromas which gave me signs this wine was not faulty at all. I found the intensity to be medium plus with a semi-aged bouquet. Unripe cherries, plum, and dark berries such as blackberry are also very prominent. There is also an earthiness such as gravel stone and dry clay which is the main terroir of Montalcino. I also sensed the presence of old oak maybe used a few times and esters of white pepper, vanilla bean, rose petals, and bay leaf.

On the palate, this wine was off dry with a medium body. I can agree on the fruit notes of unripe cherry, blackberries and plum that I sensed on the nose. Wet stone, porcini mushrooms and dark orange dry clay were definitely present. Old wood from the oak, with a medium roast jumped out in my mouth. Other sensory notes such as white pepper and bayleaf a slight hint of rose petals and a slight hint of vanilla bean as well. I found the tannins to be medium high and the alcohol level was medium plus. Acidity levels were high and the complexity in the mouthfeel was medium plus. This wine has a very pleasant lengthy finish and is just begging for food… All in all a great wine I would say!
